WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR APRIL 29, 2024 TO MAY 5, 2024

During the week of April 29, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 954 earthquakes within the state.

The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.5 that occurred on May 1 at 22:58:02 AKDT (May 2, 06:58:02 UTC), 57 miles SE of Herbert Island. This event generated a sequence of aftershocks that lasted throughout the week, consisting of just over 100 events above a magnitude 2, including 3 other events above a magnitude 5. 

Other notable events this week:

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake that occurred 12 miles east of Illiamna Volcano on May 3 at 01:29:32 AKDT. This event was felt throughout south central Alaska including in Anchorage, Eagle River, Homer, and surrounding areas. 

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake that occurred on May 5 at 00:27:49 AKDT, 126 miles south of Westdahl Peak in the Aleutian Islands. 

Elevated activity continues in the Lisburne Peninsula in the western part of the Brooks Range, with 31 events ranging in magnitude from 1.1 to 3.7. 

There were 36 icequakes recorded this week. Additionally, there were 5 quarry blast events recorded in the Fairbanks area. 

3 events were reported as felt during this week.
