MONTH SEISMICITY REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2024

During the month of October 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3972 earthquakes within the state with magnitudes ranging between 0.75 and 5.4 and depths between 0 and 246 km . The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.4 that occurred on October 5th at 04:50 AM AKST, 53 miles SE of Okmok Caldera in Fox Islands, Aleutian Islands. There were 25 other earthquakes of magnitude greater than 4.0. All they occurred along the subduction zone except the crustal events of M4.4 at Kodiak, M4.2 in Alaska Range, and M4.2 at Katmai volcanic area.

We also reported 68 glacial events of M0.8-2.4, primarily located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, and Yakutat Bay areas;  24 suspected quarry blasts (magnitudes M=0.8-1.4), most of which were at Fort Knox,  69 seismic events  associated with volcanic activity mostly at Katmai volcanic group and Mt. Spurr, and 4 landslides of M 1.3-2.0 in Alaska Range .

15 earthquakes were reported as felt in October. The largest number of DYFI (Did You Feel It) responses, 258, came from the M4.2 earthquake that occurred on October 11th  at 11:17AM AKDT 43 miles south of Cantwell in south-central Alaska.
