WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JULY 29, 2024 TO AUGUST 4, 2024

During the week of July 29, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 701 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.6 that occurred on August 1 at 02:03:15 AKDT (August 1, 10:03:15 UTC), 91 miles S of Sand Point. This event was not reported as felt, but generated 23 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 1.7 to 3.0. These events are aftershocks of the July 22, 2020 magnitude 7.8 Simeonof earthquake.

There were four events reported as felt this week: 

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake that occurred on July 28 at 20:49:26 AKDT, 38 miles S of Atka. This event was reported as felt in Atka. 

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake that occurred on July 31 at 00:20:43 AKDT, 42 miles SE of Yakutat. This event was reported as felt in the Yakutat and Southeast regions. 

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake that occurred on July 31 at 13:37:42 AKDT, 21 miles NE of Whittier. This event was reported as felt throughout South central Alaska.  

A magnitude 2.4 earthquake that occurred on August 3 at 04:31:29 AKDT, 15 miles W of Ester. This event was reported as felt in the Fairbanks area. 

Swarm activity subsided in both the Atka and Lisburne Peninsula areas this week. 

There was an increase in glacial activity this week, with 11 icequakes recorded in the Prince William Sound area and 8 icequakes recorded in the Yakutat area.
