WEEKLY SEISMICITY REPORT FOR OCTOBER 21, 2024 TO OCTOBER 27, 2024
The Alaska Earthquake Center reported 818 earthquakes in the state during the week of October 21, 2024. The largest earthquake, a magnitude 5.0, occurred on October 20 at 21:35:45 AKST (October 21, 05:35:45 UTC), 23 miles southwest of Attu. It was not reported as felt.
Two events were reported as felt this week. The first was a magnitude 2.6 earthquake that occurred 23 miles NE of Talkeetna. The second, also a magnitude 2.6, occurred 9 miles N of Hope.
Swarm activity in Kaktovik continues to decrease, with the number of events dropping from 65 last week to 32 this week. Recorded magnitudes ranged from 1.3 to 2.9. Similarly, the increased swarm activity near Atka from last week decreased to sixteen recorded events.
Seventeen icequakes were recorded this week in the Prince William Sound and Yakutat Bay areas. Additionally, four quarry blasts were detected at the Fort Knox mining complex.
